Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and Root Planing is one of the most effective procedures for treating of periodontal disease. The use of a ultrasonic scaler that is a scaling tip that produces a ultrasonic vibration with water. The vibrations along with a water flow remove tartar and bacteria below the gumline.  The ultrasonic scaler is more efficient in removing excessive amounts of tartar and plaque which means greater comfort to you.  After the scaling and root planing is complete, there may be a recommendation of placing Antibiotic in the pockets to help in the healing process. The removing of the tartar and bacteria is essential in controlling periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums, teeth, and bone that surrounds the teeth. Periodontal Disease cannot be cured but it can be controlled. It must be monitored and controlled to prevent the loss of teeth. We would recommend you to come in every three months for your routine dental hygiene appointment because after your scaling and root planing disrupts the growth of bacteria, some bacteria remains and may settle back in a pocket.  Once the bacteria becomes re-established in a pocket the number of bacteria can double reaching damaging levels less then ninety days. The more frequent dental hygiene appointment visits help break the stronghold of bacteria and tartar in your pockets, minimizing the recurrence of infection, and slowing down the damaging effects.
