Periodontics

When you think of dental hygiene, perhaps you think mostly of your teeth. However, your gums also play an important role in your overall oral health. When your gums and the areas around them become infected, this can lead to periodontal disease. Periodontal disease can cause bone and tooth loss and can weaken the structures of your mouth.

Dr. Alexander Della Bella works hard to take care of your periodontal health to keep your mouth in the best shape possible. Our team always attempts to prevent periodontal issues when you come in for routine visits, but if gum disease has already begun to develop, we can provide effective treatment to help your mouth stay in the best shape possible.

Signs of Periodontal Disease

It’s possible that you could have periodontal disease and not even know it. There are, however, some signs that indicate you have periodontal disease, including the following:

  • Sensitivity of the teeth and gums.
  • Bleeding, swollen, or red gums.
  • Receding gums.
  • Mouth sores.
  • Persistent bad breath.
  • Irritation in the gums.
  • Pus on the gums.
  • Extreme tartar buildup.

Our Treatment Options

Every patient’s needs will vary, so our team offers a number of solutions for periodontal therapy. Learn more about what we offer:

Arestin | This is an antibiotic that can help fight periodontal infection. Periodontal disease creates pocketing in the gums which harbor plaque and tartar. Arestin can reduce pocket depths and kill bacteria. It has been proven to be more effective at healing the gums than just scaling and root planing.

Oraqix | This is a needle-free anesthetic used for scaling and root planing procedures. It is a non-injectable anesthetic that works quickly and effectively. It takes only 30 seconds to start working and remains active for 20 minutes, though it can easily be reapplied throughout the procedure to guarantee optimal comfort.

Scaling and Root Planing | These are both non-surgical procedures to help treat periodontal disease. Through the scaling procedure, we can remove the tartar and plaque from your mouth. Root planing smooths your roots in order to keep out bad bacteria, tartar, and plaque.

Soft Tissue Management | If you have periodontal needs, we recommend coming in to see Dr. Della Bella every 3–4 months to keep an eye on bacteria growth. During these visits, we would manage your periodontal health with routine exams to determine if your daily dental hygiene habits are effective and also to rid your mouth of harmful bacteria and tartar, measure periodontal pocketing, provide an antibiotic if pockets need to heal, and continue to do scaling and root planing procedures if required. We will also check your progress with x-rays.
